The Most Expensive Marketing Mistake Coaches Make Isn't Hiring the Wrong Fractional CMO. It's Hiring One Too Soon

(Note: scroll below to download your free copy of the comprehensive, 42-page guide The Coach’s Fractional CMO Decision Workbook™ and discover what your coaching business actually needs before investing another dollar in marketing.)

Does your coaching business need a Fractional CMO?

I hear some version of the same question from established coaches almost every week.

“Scott... I know I need marketing help. I just don’t know what kind.”

It’s an honest question.

And it’s usually the wrong one.

Because once your coaching business reaches six figures, the problem is rarely a lack of marketing.

More often, it’s that you’ve accumulated a collection of marketing activities that don’t work together.

You’ve probably already invested in some combination of:

  • A new website.

  • A copywriter.

  • A LinkedIn strategy.

  • An email platform.

  • An SEO consultant.

  • A virtual assistant.

  • A social media manager.

  • Maybe even an agency.

Each investment made sense at the time.

Each promised to move your coaching business forward.

Yet here you are...

Still wondering why your pipeline feels unpredictable.

Some months your calendar fills up.

Other months are uncomfortably quiet.

One referral changes everything.

Then nothing happens for weeks.

You begin asking yourself questions most established coaches eventually ask.

“Do I need better marketing?”

“Should I hire an agency?”

“Maybe I need a Fractional CMO?”

Maybe.

But maybe not.

Here’s what I’ve learned after more than three decades leading marketing organizations and working alongside coaching businesses…

The biggest mistake isn’t hiring the wrong provider. It’s hiring the right provider to solve the wrong problem.

I’ve seen executive coaches hire agencies before they had clear positioning.

I’ve seen leadership coaches invest heavily in websites before deciding which audience they actually wanted to serve.

I’ve seen sales coaches produce incredible content that never led prospects toward the right coaching offer.

I’ve seen business coaches hire specialists for email, LinkedIn, SEO, and paid advertising, only to discover that nobody was responsible for connecting the entire system.

I’ve also seen career coaches spend thousands of dollars creating marketing assets while remaining the person making every decision, approving every project, and trying to hold everything together.

That’s exhausting.

More importantly... it’s expensive.

Not simply because of the money invested.

Because every month spent solving the wrong problem is another month your coaching business isn’t building a more predictable pipeline.

That is why I’m cautious whenever a coach tells me they think they need a Fractional CMO.

My first response is rarely...

“Let’s talk about working together.”

Instead, I ask questions:

  • What’s actually limiting growth?

  • Is it positioning?

  • Is it the coaching offer?

  • Is it business development?

  • Is it lead generation?

  • Is it conversion?

  • Is it execution?

Or has the business simply reached the point where you can no longer be the coach, the marketer, the project manager, the copywriter, the strategist, the salesperson, and the CEO all at the same time?

Those are very different problems, and they require very different solutions.

  • Sometimes the right answer is a Fractional CMO.

  • Sometimes it’s a consultant.

  • Sometimes it’s an agency.

  • Sometimes it’s a specialist.

  • Sometimes AI can eliminate hours of manual work.

And sometimes the only thing standing between where you are today and where you want your coaching business to be is one strategic decision you’ve been avoiding.

The point is this… you shouldn’t spend another dollar on marketing until you’re confident you’re solving the right problem.

That’s exactly why I created The Coach’s Fractional CMO Decision Workbook™.

It IS NOT designed to convince you to hire a Fractional CMO. It’s designed to help you determine whether you actually need one.

Inside, you’ll evaluate your coaching business through a structured assessment, compare five different marketing support options, identify hiring red flags, learn what a Fractional CMO should and should not do, and build a practical roadmap for your next decision.

Whether you ultimately choose a Fractional CMO, consultant, agency, specialist, AI, or another path entirely, you’ll move forward with far more clarity than guesswork.

Because the cost of the wrong marketing decision isn’t just measured in dollars.

It’s measured in months of lost momentum.
