Why the Right Prospects Still Don’t Hire You (Even When They Need Your Coaching)
Sep 25, 2026
Your positioning may make you relevant. But if your marketing misses the moment that matters, prospects can see the value... and still wait
Coaches know this frustrating pattern.
A perfect prospect reads your work… tells you your approach is exactly what they need… engages with you in an amazing conversation… but then nothing happens.
No objection. No clear no. Just, “Let me think about it,” or “Maybe next quarter.”
The usual response is to publish more content or add another credential. But credibility probably isn’t the problem. Strong credentials may get you considered. They rarely create a reason to act now.
Relevance gets attention. Readiness creates action.
Your positioning answers, “Is this coach relevant to me?” Your marketing must also answer, “Why does this matter today?”
Karen Cappello makes that distinction clear in her report, 25 Moments That Make Coaching Matter Now. Her framework identifies the situations that move coaching from a good idea to a timely decision.
People rarely wake up wanting coaching in the abstract. They look for help because something changed, an important deadline is approaching, a familiar problem became too costly, or a meaningful opportunity feels close enough to pursue.
Five signals make coaching matter now
-
The stakes became real. Performance, revenue, health, confidence, a relationship, or professional credibility is now exposed.
-
A deadline appeared. A first 90 days, quarterly target, launch, career decision, or personal milestone created a clock.
-
Expectations rose. A new role, ambitious goal, demanding client, medical warning, or business commitment changed the standard.
-
Their world changed. A promotion, plateau, team challenge, lost account, health setback, or life transition made yesterday’s approach insufficient.
-
A meaningful opportunity opened. A leadership role, major contract, business expansion, career move, or healthier future created upside worth protecting.
One signal creates interest. When two or three converge, coaching begins to feel less like something useful someday and more like support for a decision that matters now.
Build your marketing around the moment
Create entry points around the situations your best clients are navigating. A First 90 Days Leadership Diagnostic, Stalled Sales Pipeline Audit, Business Growth Constraint Assessment, or Sustainable Energy Scorecard will attract more immediate demand than another broad guide.
You don’t need a different coaching offer for every situation. You need different doors into the same offer, each connected to a recognizable moment.
Change your discovery questions. Don’t stop at, “What would you like to improve?” Ask what changed, why this matters now, what happens if nothing changes, who else is affected, and what becomes possible if the prospect gets it right.
Those questions reveal the context behind the stated goal… and whether the prospect is merely interested or truly ready.
Make your pipeline recognize readiness
Some buying moments are publicly visible. Promotions, executive appointments, funding announcements, new revenue targets, acquisitions, and business launches can all create a reason to begin a thoughtful conversation.
Others are private. Burnout, health concerns, confidence problems, career uncertainty, and difficult relationships may only surface through an assessment, a specific article, an email reply, or an inquiry. Your marketing system needs ways for prospects to recognize themselves and raise their hands.
Review your content with that distinction in mind. If every article promises better leadership, sales, growth, wellness, or confidence, readers may appreciate the advice without seeing a reason to act. Write about the moment surrounding the problem, not only the outcome your coaching provides.
If prospects keep delaying, you may not have a credibility problem. You may have a timing gap.
Your positioning should name the buyer. Your marketing should clarify the stakes. Your pipeline should recognize the moment.
