The real reason prospects ghost a great coach
For years, your network did the heavy lifting. A former client mentioned your name in a leadership meeting. A colleague made an introduction. The prospect showed up already believing you could help, and the engagement moved forward with almost no friction.
Then the pipeline flattened.
Your clients still get results. But outside the circle of people who already know you, something breaks. Prospects find your website. They read your posts. Some even book a call, nod along, tell you it was helpful.
Then they vanish.
It’s easy to blame price. Usually the deal was lost earlier, before pricing ever came up, because your positioning and messaging never built enough relevance, belief, or preference for the buyer to act. And you can’t out-content a weak position. More marketing just broadcasts the same confusion at scale.
Most likely, your messaging and positioning aren’t resonating with your prospective clients.
Before a buyer chooses you, your messaging and positioning have to pass three tests
Miss one and they ghost, and no one tells you why.
-
Discoverable: the recognition test
Before a buyer weighs your competence, they’re checking one thing... is this for someone like me?
“Does this coach understand my situation?” “Do they solve the problem that’s costing me right now?”
“I help ambitious leaders unlock their potential” sounds polished. It also sounds like a thousand other coaches. Broad positioning feels safe because it leaves every door open. But when a buyer can’t see their own reality in your words, they think “this might be useful, but I’m not sure it’s for someone like me,” and they move on. You’re visible. You’re just not recognizable.
-
Trusted: the risk test
Hiring a coach is a real bet... their money, their reputation, sometimes a budget they had to defend to a boss, and a problem they may not have said out loud to anyone. So the private question shifts:
“I’m sure they’re capable, but do they get what I’m actually dealing with?”
Credentials establish that you’re legitimate. They don’t prove you can get this buyer to this outcome. Trust comes from demonstrated understanding and specific evidence... where the client started, what kept them stuck, what changed, and the result. And here’s what most coaches miss: the discovery call rarely creates trust anymore. It validates, deepens, or disqualifies the trust your message built before the call. Without that foundation, a good conversation ends in polite interest instead of a signed agreement.
-
Chosen: the alternative test
Trust earns you a place on the shortlist. It doesn’t make you the obvious choice. Now the buyer sets you beside other credible coaches with their own experience, methods, and testimonials, and often has to justify the pick to a spouse, a boss, or a board.
“Why this coach and not the others?” “What do they see that the rest don’t?”
Most coaches answer with years of experience, personalized support, or how much they care. Those are real, and they create zero separation because every credible competitor says the same thing. To be chosen, you need a clear point of view on the buyer’s problem, a distinct way of solving it, and proof that makes the decision feel safe. Without it, the buyer concludes “they all seem similar,” and picks the cheapest option, waits, or tries to handle it alone.
